The Happy Planner Do’s and Don’t’s

do's and don'ts

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

So you have taken the plunge and bought your first Happy Planner. Now what? There are so many different ways to use the happy planner that you have to find what works for you. And to do that, you just have to dive in.

There are a few things to keep in mind when starting out. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to think about when you are planning.

The Happy Planner Do’s and Don’t’s

Do Experiment- Play around with different techniques, layouts, stickers, washi, hole punches, etc. You might find that something you didn’t like becomes your favorite. I didn’t think I would use washi, so I didn’t buy any when I started. But, after seeing other peoples layouts, I decided to give it a shot. I know love using washi.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t love your layout- The good thing about planners, each week is a new canvas. You get many chances to start over and experiment.

Don’t buy everything at once- You might find that you don’t like one thing and love another. It’s very tempting to #buyallthewashi, but washi rolls last f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Plus, you might get overwhelmed with all the options when you sit down to plan. Planning is so much fun that you don’t want to quit because you got overwhelmed.

Not sure what to start out with? See my last blog on the beginners shopping list.

Do follow experienced planners Instagrams and blogs- You will get so much inspiration from these people. They will give you so many new ideas and techniques to try out and make planning easier.

Do join the community- The Happy Planner community is filled with generous, creative, and lovely people. The groups have happy mail swaps, wishing wells, and many other types of fun activities for you to get samples of other supplies you might not have tried. Plus, everyone is like minded, and it’s a fun place to hang out and learn more about your new hobby. There are many planner groups on Facebook to choose from. Go join a couple.

Don’t worry about what others are doing- This is YOUR Happy Planner. Use it the way it works for you. There is no right or wrong way to use it. There is no right or wrong way to decorate. Have blank space? Who cares! It doesn’t have to be filled to the brim. There is no wrong way to plan.

Do have FUN!- Enjoy your new hobby! A hobby that will help you become more productive. Give it some time to find your style.

Hi! I'm Monica, the face behind Munchkins and Coffee.  Like most, I enjoy long walks on the beach and quiet dinners with the Mister. But let's be real, I'm a mom to 2 munchkins and to 2 4-legged kids so those things are few and far between.  I dabble in a variety of DIY projects and crafts and sell SVGs for the Cricut/Silhouette. I love to cook and bake and I'm a type 1 diabetic. Target and H-E-B are my happy places. I love to read but don't do it as much as I'd like and I'm totally guilty of binge-watching shows on Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. Coffee gets me through the day and is my "drug" of choice. 🙂 That's where the name comes in. Kids, life and all the beautiful chaos in between. So, check out my Etsy shop for SVG/cutting files for your Cricut/Silhouette and keep an eye out on here and my Facebook for my free cut files.
